Well preserved: the renewable alternative to single-use

These containers encase food all around in nature. Because birch bark is waterproof and airtight, yet also flexible and very durable, it was used millennia ago to pack and transport food. We at sagaan have rediscovered this ancient technique, refined classic shapes, and established the vessels in the modern market.

We were able to get to know and appreciate family businesses in the Taiga personally, harvesting birch bark from living trees and crafting natural vessels according to old traditions. Together, we have created strong partnerships that enable the craftspeople to have a stable livelihood.
In addition to preserving the craft and the forest, the use of the vessels also contributes to their sustainability. This is because the antibacterial vessels protect food very effectively from premature spoilage, they are light and stable, meaning they can be taken directly to the shops for packaging-free shopping – and they can later (much later, they can be reused for generations) be returned to nature according to the Cradle to Cradle principle.
